Talking (Potato) Head.

This morning, on the 5th anniversary of the beginning of the war in Iraq, Vice-President Dick Cheney was interviewed by ABC's Martha Raddatz during the network's "Good Morning America" show:

Cheney: "The surge has worked. That's been a major success."
Raddatz: "Two-thirds of Americans say it's not worth fighting."
Cheney: "So?"
Raddatz: "'So?'?? You don't care what the American people think?"
Cheney: "No. I think you cannot be...um...blown off course by the, ah, fluctuations in the public opinion polls."

Fluctuations, Mr. Vice President? Actually the polls have been pretty consistent over the past few years. The overwhelming number of U.S. citizens - people whom you work for, Dick - are against this war. Even those of us (myself included) who were initially of the belief that invading Iraq was the right thing to do, have come to realize that the handling of this war has been a complete disaster. It's been five years since Cheney's administration got us into this debacle, and all we've to show for it is nearly 4,000 Americans killed, an unprecedented rise in Islamic extremism, an all time low opinion of our country in the international community and trillions squandered.

"So?"

Excuse me, dear reader. I was taught manners by my parents. I was taught to never talk finances, religion or politics in public. But, when the Bush/Cheney administration continues to raise its level of hubris ever higher - as if it thinks it's competing in some reversed limbo contest - it's high time to say 'enough!'

When our Vice-President clearly states that he'd rather listen to the voices in his head than the voices of the overwhelming majority of the Americans, nothing seems as funny anymore.

America HAS spoken... Humor-Blogs.com is a wealth of funniness.

It's terrible to have our troops out there with no exit plan. Nice job, Dick.

thought his exit plan involved a pine box....

Unfortunately, Cheney has a point. You cannot support as massive an undertaking as the Iraq invasion and then choose to withdraw that support because Iraqis and Al Qaeda were rude enough to not blow away at the snap of Our fingers.

The time to stop this idiocy was before it started. It's not as if most of the people who pledged support for the invasion in 2003 had not lived through Vietnam.

I am forced to conclude that the wit and intelligence of our Administration since 2001 matches the wit and intelligence of those who voted them in. Twice.

And all complaining short of immediate Citizen Impeachment is just ... empty.

Sticking the course IS a legitimate course of action when the cause itself is legitimate. I now have my doubts that we went into Iraq with all the facts, any plan and true knowledge of both the objectives and the means to achieve them.

And, please...let's not forget that Al Qaeda wasn't even present in Iraq until we initiated hostilities. And you're right, we should have stopped "this idiocy before it started". It would have helped if this administration wasn't bending/fabricating/coaching the intelligence to fit their desire to go to war.

And then there are those who would argue the results of at least one of those elections...I won't, but in both cases you have to admit Bush's claim to a "mandate" is hollow.

Finally, I'd humbly suggest that "complaining" is not only a right of the citizenry...it's absolutely necessary for a healthy democracy.

I hear you.

It would have helped if this administration wasn't bending/fabricating/coaching the intelligence to fit their desire to go to war.

I invite you to read the text of Dr. Joseph Goebbels's speech to the Nuremburg Congress of the NSDAP in 1934.

I argue, on the basis of this, that it is the duty of an informed citizenry to assume that "official" intelligence is being manipulated, and act accordingly.

Been there, read that. Perhaps there's a bit too much Pollyana in this old boy, but I'd like to think that ANY U.S. administration was, is or could be on a par with the Third Reich.
